Statement of Support: 

As an organization that empowers experienced professionals, managers, and executives for successful career transitions, 40Plus of Greater Washington serves professionals of all races and ethnicities. We stand firm in our support of all people who have been affected by the horrendous racist and violent acts in our country.

We condemn the police brutality that led to the tragic and needless death of George Floyd, along with others before him such as Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and Eric Garner. We also condemn the violence, bigotry and systemic racism that has occurred during the past 400 years, particularly against black men and women in our nation. Furthermore, we stand firmly against discrimination of any kind including age discrimination, which frustrates many of our members during their search for new employment.

We offer our condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and loved ones. As a way to honor his memory, we stand ready to work with other agencies and community-based organizations, along with the community at large, to end injustice in all its forms against the oppressed and all persons of color.

Going through a job search is stressful for everyone, but job candidates over 40 may face extra difficult obstacles due to stereotypes associated with older workers. 

The goal of this workshop is to help job candidates over 40 identify hiring practices that are not friendly to older workers, how to overcome them, and how to advocate for yourself.

Further, we will spend some time discussing how to leverage your experience as an older worker to be gainfully employed.

About the speaker

Edgar Ndjatou (ja-too) is a Human Resources Consultant and Principal of Officium, LLC. Edgar is passionate about creating workplaces that value fair treatment, trust, and open communications. Edgar also embraces change and the opportunity it brings, which helps him connect with individuals dealing with difficult career obstacles.

Before founding Officium, LLC, Edgar practiced employment law for nine years, including co-managing his own law firm. As an employment lawyer, Edgar represented clients in the federal, nonprofit, and private sectors, in all phases of administrative proceedings and lawsuits involving claims under federal, state, and local employment laws. For employer clients, Edgar provided advice and counsel to minimize litigation risk by ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. Edgar’s clients included charter schools, tutoring companies, construction firms, restaurants, IT companies, and other business owners. Edgar’s experiences have given him a perspective on how addressing a client’s needs involves using holistic, creative, and reasoned approaches.
