Empowering Experienced Professionals for Successful Career Transitions

Statement of Support:

As an organization that empowers experienced professionals, managers, and executives for successful career transitions, 40Plus of Greater Washington serves professionals of all races and ethnicities. We stand firm in our support of all people who have been affected by the horrendous racist and violent acts in our country.

We condemn the police brutality that led to the tragic and needless death of George Floyd, along with others before him such as Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and Eric Garner. We also condemn the violence, bigotry and systemic racism that has occurred during the past 400 years, particularly against black men and women in our nation. Furthermore, we stand firmly against discrimination of any kind including age discrimination, which frustrates many of our members during their search for new employment.

We offer our condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and loved ones. As a way to honor his memory, we stand ready to work with other agencies and community-based organizations, along with the community at large, to end injustice in all its forms against the oppressed and all persons of color.

Business Etiquette And People Skills: Discover The Power Of Modern Manners

Speaker Website:

Did you know that 85% of your success in business is based on your people skills? Your attitude and behavior toward others are as important as your resume, experience, training and technical abilities. Employers and clients look for the human qualities that make the difference in business relationships: courtesy, respect, trust, and perception of reliability. Etiquette skills are the underlying foundation of good relationships, and good relationships translate to business success. Improve your etiquette skills and not only will you outclass the competition, but you will watch your self confidence soar.

Whether you are re-entering the job force, looking to move up the ladder, or eager to jumpstart a sagging career, etiquette skills are a powerful addition to your business toolkit.

Nancy R. Mitchell is an established protocol and etiquette consultant and advisor with more than 25 years of experience in the field. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., where she developed and teaches protocol courses in the School of Business and Public Management's Event Management Certificate Program, as well as at Stratford University, Falls Church, Va.

Ms. Mitchellserves as protocol and special events consultant to the Library of Congress, the world's largest library and cultural center, where she was director of special events and protocol for more than two decades.

In her former position at the Library of Congress, Ms. Mitchell and her staff were responsible for planning and managing more than 400 events each year. She coordinated the institution's major special events, visits of heads of state and other foreign dignitaries, fundraising galas, conferences and meetings. As the Library's chief protocol advisor, she served as liaison to the White House, the U.S Department of State, Congress, the Supreme Court and other government agencies, embassies, academia and corporations.

Ms. Mitchell is trained and certified by the Protocol School of Washington and owns and manages The Etiquette Advocate, a firm providing etiquette and protocol training to corporations, organizations, government agencies, embassies, universities, hotels and individuals. She is the etiquette consultant to Engaged! magazine, has been featured on Good Morning America, Fox Morning News and National Public Radio, and is quoted on matters of etiquette and protocol by the New York Times, Washington Business Journal, and the Washington Post.

Ms. Mitchell is a co-owner of the firm, Protocol Partners, and is a member of the Protocol and Diplomacy International Protocol Officers Association and the Women Business Owners of Montgomery Country (MD).

Plan to join us after the meeting for networking.  Many of us carry our conversations to lunch at the nearby Brookings Institution.

Attire is business casual, recruiters are often present, so we ask all Monday Speaker attendees to contribute to the professional standards and objectives of this important networking meeting.

Doors open at 9:30 for networking and the program starts promptly at 10:00.
