Statement of Support: 

As an organization that empowers experienced professionals, managers, and executives for successful career transitions, 40Plus of Greater Washington serves professionals of all races and ethnicities. We stand firm in our support of all people who have been affected by the horrendous racist and violent acts in our country.

We condemn the police brutality that led to the tragic and needless death of George Floyd, along with others before him such as Breonna Taylor, Philando Castile and Eric Garner. We also condemn the violence, bigotry and systemic racism that has occurred during the past 400 years, particularly against black men and women in our nation. Furthermore, we stand firmly against discrimination of any kind including age discrimination, which frustrates many of our members during their search for new employment.

We offer our condolences to the family of George Floyd, his friends and loved ones. As a way to honor his memory, we stand ready to work with other agencies and community-based organizations, along with the community at large, to end injustice in all its forms against the oppressed and all persons of color.

Whether at a crowded reception or in a one-on-one meeting, making the most of your networking opportunities can often depend on how much you’re willing to GIVE, or help, others.  Sharing your contacts, resources, and offering your expertise can be a great way to start or maintain a networking connection

40Plus volunteers Ken Schoppmann and Jeryl Skinner will illustrate how this can work through a series of role-playing scenarios, to show how to land informational interviews and how your offer to help your networking contacts can bring out the best in the people you meet, and lead to the type of authentic relationships that will continue to help you well after your first meeting.


Ken Schoppmann 

As a Global Association Executive, Ken cultivates strategic partnerships, while building and motivating teams that advance professional societies and corporate trade associations to achieve greater performance, member loyalty and revenue growth.  Ken adds leadership value by creating innovative benefit programs, designing legislative advocacy campaigns and shepherding regulatory initiatives, while designing, empowering and managing large, diverse, cohesive organizations. Some of these accomplishments include:

→ Restructured Board meetings at LES to increase time spent on strategic issues, increasing association visibility in key media 40%. 

→ Boosted membership 20% at Licensing Executives Society (LES) and 50% at Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). Created programs to utilize member knowledge and experience to drive association value, increasing member contributions five-fold at LES. 

→ Increased revenue 50% at LES and 133% at CRN. Led $1M turnaround of financial operations at CRN, driving fund balance from $200K deficit to $800K surplus. Restructured meeting operations, saving $800K at LES. Outsourced back office operations, projected to reduce costs 30%. 

→ Championed individual development and professional education opportunities at LES, promoting 30% of employees to new roles and responsibilities, and increasing employee retention from 40% to 80%.

→ Built strategic partnerships with related organizations to design/deliver mutually beneficial educational programs, raising $300K revenue and increasing member satisfaction 20%

AND Jeryl Skinner

As a future non-profit development and marketing director, Jeryl wants to leverage her strong strategic planning, marketing and development skills to lead teams in a mission-driven environment. This will support the organization in reaching record-setting revenue and opportunity to further their mission. During her most recent experience in the senior living industry, Jeryl discovered that she had a passion for bringing health, safety, and happiness to beneficiaries of services.  She would like to make it her mission to work and contribute to non-profit organizations that give back to the community in a meaningful and impactful way. She is a multicultural woman who is proficient in Spanish and who takes pride in being a brand and relationship builder. She is driven and passionate about getting optimal results in everything that I do. She thinks strategically and solves problems creatively, always reaching for innovative solutions.
